THE SORBWEB™ PLUS SELF-SEALING OIL CONTAINMENT SYSTEM

The SorbWeb™ Plus secondary oil containment system is an effective and reliable passive oil leak and spill management system that provides continuous protection against oil spills and leaks associated with transformers, capacitors, storage tank facilities and other oil-filled equipment. In its passive state the system allows water to move freely through its bottom “Smart Barrier” and pass through without accumulating. However, when hydrocarbons come in contact with the “Smart Barrier” it will undergo a physical change by congealing and sealing, turning into an impermeable membrane and thus preventing hydrocarbons from escaping the containment area.

A State of the Art Design

SorbWeb™ Plus is a gravity-based subterranean secondary oil containment system that surrounds oil-filled equipment with geosynthetic materials. The system effectively traps oil from catastrophic oil spills and leaks. The SorbWeb™ Plus secondary oil containment system critical components include:

  • A synthetic impermeable liner
  • An absorbent or adsorbent filter layer
  • A retention layer of smart oil-absorbing fabric that seals on contact with hydrocarbons

This green technology incorporates a state of the art design that allows for driveability, eliminates the need for sumps and pumps or oil water separators, does not require power to operate, and offers a virtually maintenance free alternative to conventional spill containment approaches.

Albarrie’s innovative SorbWeb™ Plus oil containment system is designed to meet both general and specific secondary containment requirements set out by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) In Canada. The oil containment system will significantly reduce capital outlays, provide environmental protection and drastically lessen the economic consequences of an oil spill. How it Works

The SorbWeb™ Plus system and its layers are designed to allow water to move freely through its “Smart Barrier” without accumulating and pass all the way through back into the native ground. At the heart of the system is a smart geotextile known as “oilmat”. In the event of a catastrophic equipment failure leading to an oil spill, the oilmat congeals and seals the oil containment system, preventing the oil from passing through.

This revolutionary multi-layer system of interlocking oil reactive geotextile fabrics makes this system a truly remarkable leap forward in the containment of hydrocarbons and the proactive protection of the environment.

SAM PERMEABLE REACTIVE BARRIER

The original SorbWeb™ Plus secondary oil containment system incorporates an oleophilic adsorbent layer, “SAM” is part of a developing green technology known as a permeable reactive barrier . It is an absorbent geocomposite with a an exceptionally high affinity for hydrocarbons and it replaces the adsorbent layer in the SorbWeb™ Plus system giving it the extraordinary ability to manage chronic leaks, localize and isolate small accidental spills and making clean up quick and easy to save time and money .

Permeable reactive barrier SAM contains a proprietary oil immobilizer trapped between two layers of geotextile fabric designed to absorb, filter and lock in hydrocarbons. SAM will remain permeable to water even after exposure to the contaminant. These unique properties make this special geotextile the ideal solution for numerous applications including:

HOW IT WORKS

A permeable reactive barrier, or “PRB,” is a subsurface emplacement of reactive materials or a wall created below ground to clean up contaminated groundwater. The wall is “permeable,” which means that groundwater can flow through it. Water must flow through the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) to be treated. The “reactive” materials that make up the wall either trap harmful contaminants or make them less harmful. The treated groundwater flows out the other side of the wall.

SAM works by acting as a permeable reactive barrier for a hydrocarbon contaminant plume. As the plume moves (typically under a natural gradient) and flows through the SAM geotextile treated water exits the other side.

Groundwater pollution is a global problem, impacting on the quality of life of people in both developed and developing countries. Permeable reactive barrier is an emerging cost effective green alternative to traditional pump and treat systems for groundwater remediation.

Barrier boom Oil Blocker was developed to help clients meet general spill containment provisions that apply to all areas of their facility which have a potential to cause an oil discharge. Oil Blocker barrier boom was specifically made to allow companies to quickly boom all or part of their perimeters to help meet federal SPCC regulations of secondary containment and diversion at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods. Oil Blocker barrier boom offers an excellent, affordable barrier option for impervious sub-grade soils like clay, puts the power to manage costs in the client’s hands and allows them the flexibility to choose what approach best works for them. For sandy soils we offer Oil Blocker Plus.

Oil Blocker barrier boom is installed vertically and is intended to minimize damage due to escaping oil by controlling the spill and keeping it within your property. Designed using the same concept and quality geotextile fabric materials as the innovative SorbWeb™ Plus oil containment system, Oil Blocker barrier boom allows water to pass through but traps and locks in hydrocarbons on contact keeping them from leaving the facility until the incident can be responded to.

Oil Spill containment Oil Blocker Plus uses the same principles and high quality fabric as Oil Blocker but incorporates an impermeable membrane at the base of the oil spill containment to address sandy or unknown soil types.

Oil Blocker Plus oil spill containment is designed to allow water to pass through its “smart” vertical walls but trap and lock in oil, it is intended for use around small oil filled equipment. Oil Blocker Plus oil spill containment affords protection to facilities, it can be quickly and inexpensively installed, allowing companies to meet SPCC regulations for secondary containment at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods.

Ideal for use in wind and solar farms, mobile transformers or electrical transformer storage facilities, once Oil Blocker Plus oil spill containment is selected as the appropriate solution; the design and capacity are determined by working with the client’s engineering team and following good engineering practices to contain the most likely discharge of oil until clean up occurs.
